Species conservation

Modern, scientifically managed zoos fulfil a variety of functions. They provide areas for local recreation and are an important feature of the leisure landscape. They also serve as educational and learning centres where visitors of all ages can learn more about animals, nature and biological relationships. However, in this era of species extinction and worldwide loss of biodiversity, zoos have also taken on an important role in nature and species conservation.

Zoos have a unique opportunity here to confront this highly sensitive issue. With their visitors, they are able to reach many more people than any other institution working in the field of species conservation. A visit to the zoo can raise awareness of animals and the threats they face, nature and environmental conservation, and sustainability, and can even get visitors engaged in these issues. This is also our aim at the Zoo, and we try to fulfil our species conservation mission in a number of ways. In addition to breeding endangered animal species and keeping them in appropriate conditions, and providing a variety of learning and educational opportunities, supporting conservation projects in our animals’ native habitats also plays an important role. Here you can find out more about our work to promote species conservation, and about the educational opportunities on offer at our Zoo.
