New residents at the orangutan house
Animal news | 16 April 2025

Meet Apollo, Latura and Felipe, the latest additions to our orangutan house.
They are a family of spectacled langurs from the Grasleben Species Conservation Centre, consisting of 8-year-old male Apollo, 14-year-old female Latura and their 10-month-old infant Felipe. Having arrived on 9 April, they are now gradually settling into their new home.
Spectacled langurs are part of the leaf monkey family. Their natural habitat is the tropical forests of the Malay Peninsula, Myanmar and Thailand. These diurnal tree-dwellers are severely threatened by the destruction and fragmentation of their habitat, and hunting.
Like our colobus monkeys, spectacled langurs feed primarily on leaves, but they also eat fruit, seeds, and invertebrates. Microorganisms in their gut help them digest cellulose-rich plant matter and break down bitter and toxic substances in their food.
