Hatari, our new African forest buffalo calf

Animal news | 5 February 2025

African forest buffalo calf.

Our herd of African forest buffalo welcomed a new female calf in late January, named Hatari. The little buffalo cow is the seventh baby born to mother Zambezi and father Malawi. Her big sister Finnja also lives with the family. A subspecies of the African buffalo, the forest buffalo is characterised by its reddish coat, fringed ears and backward-pointing horns. The latter are very practical for life in the dense rainforests of Central Africa where the animals typically live. Forest buffalo are also vegetarians and feed exclusively on leaves, grass and hay. With winter temperatures currently around freezing, our forest buffalo only venture outside for short periods during the day, when the sun is shining ‒ otherwise they prefer to stay in their warm stalls.
