Golden takin kid

This year we were delighted to welcome another new addition to our golden takin fold. Our female Chengdu gave birth to a bouncing baby boy on 18 February. The little golden takin is named Dagu, and he is the eighth offspring to be born successfully to this rare Asian ungulate here at Dresden Zoo. In the wild, golden takins live in mountain forests in the central Chinese province of Shaanxi at altitudes of up to 4,000 m, where they are estimated to number less than 6,000. Takins are classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
